I am a bit embarrassed about this but I am having considerable difficulty with what seems should be the simplest of things.
I am currently working through English Comp 1 (EN120.4.1). I consider myself an ok writed but have had difficulty with the actual rules of writing. Currently, and specifically, this simple self-check paragraph is a hurdle.
Question 1 is easy
Question 2 is tough. I would pick as trasitional sentences 2, 4, 6 (side comment: flow from 6 to 7 doesnt seem correct), 8, and 12 The answers are actually 2, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12.
I don't understand why 4 would not be transitional, or why 9 and 11 would be considering they are expanding on 8?
I am sure this is elementary but I am just not getting it.
I sure appreciate any help that anyone can offer.
SELF-CHECK 6
Read the following paragraph carefully. Respond to the questions on paper or in a “self-check” computer file. The sentences are numbered to assist your analysis.
Ways to Relax
(1.) People have many ways of relaxing.(2.)For example, I like to sit in front of the fireplace and read a book. (3.) This always relaxes me, and I’m ready to go from there refreshed and ready to tackle new work. (4.) Another illustration might be knitting or building model boats. (5.) Not only do these help people relax, but they also produce a tangible result, such as a cardigan or a sailing ship model they can be proud of.(6.)Of course, for some, knitting or building model boats might seem exhausting. (7.) But what is relaxing for some people may seem like too much work for other people. (8.) For instance, my friend Sally loves to garden. (9.) In fact, in the winter, she goes a bit batty because she can’t get outside to work in her garden. (10.) She compensates by planting and tending potted plants indoors—here, there, and everywhere.(11.) Frankly, I think she would be happy to live in a jungle if it gave her the opportunity to tend to gardening all year around. (12.) In any case, it’s obvious that just as there are different strokes for different folks, there are all kinds of ways for people to relax.
